October 22, 2004—These (snow) Boots Are Made For Walkin’
Ok, there is a short story here. These are my snow boots from when we lived all those winters in Bend. I bought them many years ago at Cabelas; they are made in Italy of cowhide, complete with the hair, and somehow they never leak or get wet. I love them to death and when I was sorting through things to bring along in the fifth wheel I thought long and hard about these boots. They very nearly didn’t get taken, my thinking of course being “We’ll never willingly be in the snow and the chances of using them are remote”. As you can see, I made the right choice by bringing them along.
The campground is nearly empty now—the tenters have totally vacated and mainly it is the Class C rental motorhomes now visiting. Out of 101 sites, we are whittled down to about six rigs a night. What started yesterday as slight snowflakes falling turned serious after dark and we awoke to a winter wonderland just in time for Halloween.
It was well worth the morning walk (just above the campground) in the cold to get these pictures of some seldom seen scenes of the canyon in the snow. We had told the Park Service we would need to go when it snowed, so I guess our wheels will be turning towards a lower elevation very soon. Once last lucky chance to see pine trees draped in puffy white before living among Arizona’s cactus for the winter, has been a wondrous thing though.
